You installed Claude Code. You watched it read your codebase, refactor a component, write tests you didn’t ask for. You leaned back in your chair. You thought: this changes things.

You were right. And you were also, unfortunately, using it wrong.

Not wrong in the way that implies you’re stupid — wrong in the way that implies nobody told you there was a second floor. You’ve been living in the lobby of an entire building. The lobby is nice! It has a couch and a coffee machine and a very intelligent entity that can write TypeScript faster than you can read it. But upstairs there are weapons. Tools. Extensions of capability that turn an impressive AI coding assistant into something closer to a platform — an ecosystem where the community decides what Claude becomes.

They’re called plugins. And unless you’ve gone looking, you probably don’t know they exist.

This post is your guided tour. By the end of it, you’ll understand what plugins are, how they work, what a plugin marketplace is, and you’ll have installed your first one. The Abyss gave you a blade. Let’s go see the armory.


What Are Plugins, Actually?

Here’s what most people think plugins are: little add-ons. Extras. Nice-to-haves.

Here’s what plugins actually are: the difference between a tool and a platform.

A plugin is a bundle of capabilities that extends Claude Code beyond its default behavior. Not in the vague “it does more stuff” sense — in the very specific sense that plugins give Claude new skills it didn’t have before, new commands you can invoke, new agents it can dispatch, new automation it can trigger, and new services it can connect to.

There are five types of plugin components. I’m going to explain each one without making you read documentation, because documentation is where enthusiasm goes to die.

Skills: The Invisible Hand

Skills are the most subtle and arguably most powerful component. A skill is a block of context — instructions, patterns, expertise — that Claude automatically loads based on what you’re doing. You don’t invoke skills. You don’t even know they’re there. Claude reads the skill’s description, decides it’s relevant to the current task, and absorbs it.

Think of it this way: without skills, Claude Code is a brilliant generalist. It can write code in any language, follow any pattern, solve most problems. But it doesn’t know your patterns. It doesn’t know your team’s conventions, your preferred testing frameworks, your deployment pipeline. Skills are how you teach it.

A code review skill might say: “When reviewing code, check for error handling, security concerns, test coverage, and adherence to the project’s existing patterns.” A Go development skill might encode an entire TDD workflow with parallel test agents. Claude reads these instructions and becomes a more specialized version of itself, temporarily, for exactly the task you need.

The magic is that you don’t manage this. You install a plugin, and its skills appear when they’re relevant and vanish when they’re not. The invisible hand.

Commands: The Stuff You Reach For

If skills are the invisible hand, commands are the visible one. Commands are slash commands — /commit, /review-pr, /deep-research — that you type explicitly to trigger a specific workflow.

Commands are the bread and butter. They’re the things you do fifty times a day that you’re tired of doing manually. Commit your code with a well-formatted message. Open a PR with a summary and test plan. Generate a research report. Scaffold a new component. Commands package these workflows into a single invocation.

Under the hood, a command is just a markdown file with some frontmatter and a prompt. That’s it. No compiled code, no API integration, no SDK. A markdown file that tells Claude what to do when you type the slash command. The barrier to building one is approximately zero, which is exactly why there are thousands of them.

Agents: The Task Force

Agents are where things get interesting. An agent is a specialized sub-agent — a separate instance of Claude with its own context window that gets dispatched to handle a specific task and reports back when it’s done.

Why does this matter? Context. Claude Code’s main conversation has a context window, and when you fill it with the output of running tests, exploring a large codebase, or debugging a complex issue, you lose room for the actual work. Agents solve this. You send an agent out to run your test suite, and it comes back with a summary. The raw output stays in the agent’s context, not yours.

A test-runner agent executes your tests and reports results. An explore agent searches your codebase for patterns and answers questions. A code review agent examines your changes against your standards. Each one operates independently, does its job, and returns a concise result. It’s delegation, but for AI.

The practical impact is significant: agents let Claude do more complex, multi-step work without losing track of what it’s actually trying to accomplish. They’re the reason Claude Code can feel like working with a team instead of a single assistant.

Hooks: The Tripwires

Hooks are event-driven automation. They fire at specific moments in Claude’s lifecycle — before a tool is used, after a tool is used, when a session starts, when a session ends — and they execute deterministic code. Not prompts. Actual code.

This is the distinction that matters: skills and commands are prompts that guide Claude’s behavior. Hooks are code that runs whether Claude likes it or not. A PreToolUse hook that scans for secrets before a git commit doesn’t ask Claude to check for secrets. It runs a binary that checks for secrets, and if it finds one, the commit is blocked. Period.

Hooks are where you enforce the rules. Security scanning. Code formatting. Linting. Audit logging. The things that should happen every single time, without exception, regardless of what Claude is doing or how creative it’s feeling. Hooks don’t negotiate. They execute.

If you’ve ever lost sleep over “what if the AI commits my AWS keys,” hooks are your sleeping pill.

MCP Servers: The Bridges

MCP — Model Context Protocol — is how Claude reaches outside its sandbox. An MCP server is a bridge between Claude and an external service: GitHub, Slack, Linear, Jira, Sentry, Figma, Supabase, and dozens more.

Without MCP, Claude can read your local files, run commands in your terminal, and search the web. That’s powerful, but it’s isolated. With MCP, Claude can read your GitHub issues, check your Sentry error logs, look up the Linear ticket you’re working on, and pull design specs from Figma — all within the same conversation.

The practical difference is the gap between “let me paste this error log into the chat” and “Claude, what’s the most recent Sentry error in production, and does it match the issue I’m working on?” MCP servers collapse the distance between Claude and your actual development environment.

Plugins can bundle pre-configured MCP servers, which means installing a plugin can instantly connect Claude to a service without you touching configuration files. The GitHub plugin connects Claude to GitHub. The Sentry plugin connects Claude to Sentry. You install it, you authenticate, and it works.

Five components. Five ways that plugins extend what Claude Code can do. Skills make it smarter for your context. Commands give you one-shot workflows. Agents let it delegate and parallelize. Hooks enforce your rules automatically. MCP servers connect it to the outside world.

Together, they turn Claude Code from a very impressive AI coding assistant into something you can build on. An open platform that the community — including you — gets to extend.


The Marketplace

So there are plugins. Thousands of them, in fact — over 9,000 across various registries as of early 2026, with 43 separate marketplaces serving them. The ecosystem went from “a few people sharing markdown files on GitHub” to “this is an actual thing” in about three months.

But how do you find them? How do you install them? How does any of this actually work?

The answer is marketplaces.

A marketplace, in Claude Code terms, is a catalog. Technically, it’s a GitHub repository (or any Git repo, or even a URL) that contains a .claude-plugin/marketplace.json file listing available plugins. That JSON file points to the source repos of each plugin. When you add a marketplace to Claude Code, you’re telling it: “here’s a catalog of plugins I might want to browse.”

That’s it. There’s no app store infrastructure. No review process. No payment system. No centralized authority deciding what gets listed. A marketplace is just a JSON file in a Git repo that says “here are some plugins and where to find them.”

This is either terrifying or liberating, depending on your disposition.

The Official Marketplace

Anthropic maintains an official marketplace called claude-plugins-official that ships built-in with Claude Code. You don’t need to add it — it’s already there. Run /plugin and go to the Discover tab, and you’re looking at it.

The official marketplace is curated and includes some genuinely essential plugins:

Code Intelligence plugins configure Language Server Protocol (LSP) connections — the same technology that powers VS Code’s IntelliSense. Install the TypeScript LSP plugin, and suddenly Claude sees type errors immediately after every edit. It catches missing imports, bad types, and syntax issues without running a compiler. This is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement available, and most people don’t know it exists. Available for TypeScript, Python, Rust, Go, Java, C#, Swift, Kotlin, PHP, Lua, and C/C++.

External integration plugins connect Claude to GitHub, GitLab, Atlassian (Jira/Confluence), Asana, Linear, Notion, Figma, Vercel, Firebase, Supabase, Slack, and Sentry. Pre-configured MCP servers with zero setup beyond authentication.

Development workflow plugins add commands and agents for commit workflows, PR reviews, plugin development, and agent SDK development.

Output style plugins let you customize how Claude responds — educational mode, learning mode, and more.

Community Marketplaces

The official marketplace is the floor, not the ceiling. Anyone can create a marketplace. You create a GitHub repo, add a marketplace.json, list your plugins, and share the repo URL. Other users add your marketplace with one command:

/plugin marketplace add owner/repo-name

Community marketplaces range from “one person’s personal collection” to “curated registries with hundreds of plugins.” Some focus on specific domains — Go development, security tooling, DevOps workflows. Some are grab-bags of everything the author thought was useful.

The ecosystem is messy. It’s early. It’s a little bit wild. Some plugins are brilliant. Some are half-finished experiments. Some are reinventing wheels that the official marketplace already has. This is what happens when you give a community an open extension system and step back. It’s a pain bonanza out there, and it’s exactly where the best tools get forged.

How Installation Works

When you find a plugin you want, installation is one command:

/plugin install plugin-name@marketplace-name

You choose a scope for the installation:

  • User scope — installed for you, across all projects. Your personal toolkit.
  • Project scope — installed for everyone who clones this repo. Shared team configuration, committed to .claude/settings.json.
  • Local scope — installed for you, but only in this specific repo. Personal customization that doesn’t affect teammates.

Plugins auto-update by default (configurable), and you manage everything through the /plugin interface — a tabbed UI with Discover, Installed, Marketplaces, and Errors tabs. It’s not fancy, but it works.


The Plugins That Actually Matter

Being an Opinionated and Necessarily Incomplete Tour of the Armory’s Finest Instruments

I’m not going to list all 9,000+ plugins. That would be documentation, and we’ve established how I feel about documentation. Instead, here’s a guided tour of the categories that matter and the plugins worth knowing about.

Code Intelligence: “Claude Can Finally See Your Types”

If you install one category of plugins, make it this one.

The LSP plugins give Claude real-time access to the same code analysis that powers your IDE. After every file edit Claude makes, the language server analyzes the changes and reports back: type errors, missing imports, unresolved references, syntax issues. Claude sees them instantly and fixes them in the same turn.

Before LSP plugins, Claude would write code, and you’d find out it was broken when you tried to compile or when your IDE lit up with red squiggles. Now Claude catches its own mistakes. It’s the difference between working with a junior developer who writes code and hands it to you, and a senior developer who checks their own work.

The official marketplace has LSP plugins for TypeScript, Python, Rust, Go, Java, C#, Swift, Kotlin, PHP, Lua, and C/C++. Install the ones for your languages. Thank me later.

Beyond diagnostics, LSP gives Claude code navigation — jump to definitions, find all references, inspect types on hover, list symbols, find implementations, and trace call hierarchies. This is dramatically more precise than grep-based search. When Claude needs to understand how a function is used across your codebase, it can ask the language server instead of guessing from text search.

External Integrations: “Stop Copy-Pasting Into the Chat”

The integration plugins connect Claude to external services via MCP. They’re pre-configured — install, authenticate, use.

The GitHub plugin is probably the most universally useful. Claude can read issues, create PRs, check CI status, review code, and manage releases — all within your conversation. No more switching tabs to copy-paste issue descriptions or PR comments.

Sentry integration means Claude can pull error logs directly. “What’s the most common error in production this week?” becomes a question Claude can actually answer, with stack traces.

Linear/Jira/Asana integration lets Claude read your tickets. Start a coding session with “I’m working on LINEAR-1234” and Claude pulls the ticket details, understands the requirements, and starts working.

Slack integration means Claude can post updates, read channels, and even respond to messages. Useful for automated notifications about deployments, test results, or PR reviews.

These plugins eliminate the copy-paste tax — the constant overhead of manually feeding context to Claude that already exists in your tools. They make conversations shorter because Claude already knows what you’re working on.

Development Workflows: “The Stuff You Do Fifty Times a Day”

Workflow plugins automate the repetitive rituals of development:

commit-commands handles the entire commit workflow: staging changes, generating a well-formatted commit message from the diff, creating the commit, and optionally pushing and opening a PR. It understands conventional commits, can follow your repo’s commit message style, and generally produces messages that are better than what you’d write at 4pm on a Friday.

pr-review-toolkit adds specialized agents for reviewing pull requests. Not “Claude reads the diff” — actual structured review with agents that check for security issues, test coverage, performance implications, and adherence to project conventions.

The Experimental: Community Gems

The community builds things the official marketplace wouldn’t. Niche tools for specific frameworks, experimental workflows, integrations with obscure services, and the occasional piece of genuine innovation that changes how you think about what Claude Code can do.

The best way to find these is to browse community marketplaces, check awesome-claude-plugins lists, and talk to other Claude Code users about what they’re running. The ecosystem is young enough that word of mouth is still the best discovery mechanism.


Getting Your Hands Dirty

Being a Practical Exercise in Which the Reader Installs Their First Marketplace and Discovers What They Have Been Missing

Enough theory. Let’s install some plugins.

I’m going to walk you through adding a marketplace, installing a plugin, and using it — using my own marketplace, prial-plugins, as the example. Not because it’s the only marketplace worth using, but because I built every plugin in it, I can explain exactly what each one does, and I think it’s a good demonstration of what a small, focused collection of plugins looks like in practice.

Step 1: Add the Marketplace

In Claude Code, run:

/plugin marketplace add JamesPrial/prial-plugins

That’s it. Claude Code clones the marketplace catalog and makes its plugins available in the /plugin Discover tab. You haven’t installed anything yet — you’ve just given Claude Code a new shelf to browse.

Step 2: Browse What’s Available

Run /plugin to open the plugin manager. Hit Tab to navigate to the Discover tab. You’ll see the plugins from prial-plugins listed alongside anything from the official marketplace and any other marketplaces you’ve added.

Each plugin shows its name, description, and source. Scroll through. Read the descriptions. Get a sense of what’s available.

Step 3: Install deep-research

Let’s start with the showpiece. Run:

/plugin install deep-research@prial-plugins

What it does: deep-research emulates Claude.ai’s Deep Research feature — the one behind the paywall on the web — inside Claude Code. It conducts parallel multi-agent web research on any topic and produces a structured, cited report with locally archived sources.

How it works: When you invoke it, deep-research spins up multiple Claude agents that search the web in parallel, each exploring a different facet of your question. They gather sources, extract relevant information, and synthesize everything into a coherent report with proper citations. The sources are archived locally so you can verify them later.

Try it: After installing, you can invoke the deep-research command. Ask it something you’d normally Google and spend thirty minutes reading about:

/deep-research:research What are the security implications of MCP servers in Claude Code?

Watch what happens. Multiple agents fan out, search the web, and converge on a structured report. It’s not a Google search. It’s not a ChatGPT summary. It’s parallel, agentic research that produces something closer to what an analyst would give you after a few hours of work.

This is what plugins look like when they’re good. Claude Code can’t do this out of the box. With one install, it can.

Step 4: Tour the Rest of the Lineup

deep-research is the flashiest, but the rest of the prial-plugins marketplace covers the practical stuff that makes daily development better:

security-hooks — A PreToolUse hook written in Go that scans staged files for secrets and credentials before every git commit. It matches 26 secret patterns: AWS keys, Google credentials, OpenAI tokens, GitHub tokens, database connection strings, private keys, and more. Fail-closed design — if the scanner crashes, the commit is blocked. Zero external dependencies. This is the hook that lets you stop worrying about accidentally committing your .env file.

Install it:

todo-log — A silent PostToolUse hook that captures every TaskCreate and TaskUpdate event in Claude Code and logs it to a persistent file. Supports JSON and SQLite storage backends. You never invoke it. You never think about it. It just runs in the background, maintaining a complete audit trail of every task Claude creates or updates during your sessions. Useful for reviewing what Claude did after a long session, or tracking productivity patterns over time.

version-control — Git operations and GitHub CLI workflows packaged as agents and commands. Repository management, issue and PR handling, and CI/CD workflow generation with OIDC authentication and security scanning templates. If you work with GitHub, this plugin makes the git parts of your workflow faster and more consistent.

golang-workflow — A specialized Go development workflow with TDD-first parallel agents, intelligent failure triage, and compilation pre-flight checks. If you write Go, this plugin encodes idiomatic Go patterns and quality standards into Claude’s behavior. It’s the difference between “Claude writing Go” and “Claude writing Go the way a senior Go engineer would.”

go-plugin-release — Guides you through setting up cross-platform binary compilation, distribution pipelines, and GitHub Actions CI/CD for Go-based Claude Code plugins. This is the meta-tool: the plugin that helps you ship plugins.

One marketplace. Six plugins. A secret scanner, a task auditor, a research engine, git workflows, Go expertise, and a CI/CD setup tool.

Claude Code with these installed is not the same tool as Claude Code without them. It’s not incrementally better. It’s categorically different — an assistant that catches your secrets before you commit them, logs its own work for your review, conducts parallel research, understands your version control workflow, and writes idiomatic Go with TDD discipline.

And this is just one person’s marketplace. There are forty-two others.


Why This Changes Everything

Being a Brief Meditation on Platforms, Ecosystems, and the Moment a Tool Becomes Something Larger Than Itself

Claude Code without plugins is a coding assistant. A very good one. Arguably the best one. It reads your code, understands your project, writes correct implementations, and handles complexity that would take you hours.

Claude Code with plugins is a platform.

That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should.

A tool does what its creators built it to do. A platform does what its community builds it to do. When Anthropic shipped the plugin system, they didn’t just add a feature. They changed the nature of what Claude Code is. They said: we built the foundation, now you decide what goes on top.

And the community is deciding. Fast.

9,000+ plugins in 43 marketplaces, most of them built in the last few months. LSP integrations that give Claude real-time type awareness. MCP bridges that connect Claude to every development tool you use. Workflow automations that handle the repetitive stuff so you can focus on the hard stuff. Domain-specific expertise packages that make Claude a specialist in whatever you need.

The ecosystem effect is real: every good plugin makes Claude Code better for every user who installs it. A security hook written by one developer protects thousands. A Go workflow refined by one team improves Go development for everyone who installs it. A research tool built in one person’s spare time becomes a capability that Claude Code never had before.

And here’s the part that should get you excited: building plugins is easy.

A skill is a markdown file. A command is a markdown file with frontmatter. An agent is a markdown file with a system prompt. A hook is a JSON configuration pointing to a script. A marketplace is a JSON file in a Git repo. You don’t need an SDK. You don’t need to learn an API. You don’t need to compile anything (unless you want to — the Go plugins prove that compiled hooks are viable and fast).

If you can write a prompt, you can write a skill. If you can write a shell script, you can write a hook. If you can push to GitHub, you can publish a marketplace.

The barrier to extending Claude Code is lower than the barrier to writing a browser extension, building a VS Code plugin, or contributing to any other developer tool ecosystem. And the impact is proportionally higher, because you’re not just adding a button or a syntax highlighter — you’re changing how an AI thinks and what it can do.

The ecosystem is early. It’s messy. Plugin quality is inconsistent. Discovery is still mostly word of mouth and GitHub searches. There’s no review process for community marketplaces. There’s no rating system. There’s no “top charts.” There’s no guarantee that the plugin you install will work, or work well, or not conflict with another plugin you already have.

In other words: it’s a pain bonanza.

But it’s also a gold rush. The people who figure out the patterns now — who build the essential plugins, who create the curated marketplaces, who establish the conventions that the ecosystem will follow — are the ones who will shape what this platform becomes.

We’ve seen this before. The App Store in 2008. The Chrome Web Store in 2010. npm in 2012. Every platform ecosystem starts the same way: rough edges, explosive growth, a Cambrian explosion of experiments, and then the winners emerge. We’re in the Cambrian explosion phase right now. The winners haven’t been decided yet.

So install some plugins. Try the official marketplace. Try prial-plugins. Try the community collections. See what works. See what doesn’t. Form opinions. Share them.

And when you find something missing — a workflow nobody’s automated, a service nobody’s integrated, a pattern nobody’s encoded — build it yourself. It’s just markdown. Push it to GitHub. Tell people about it.
